Question #1:

Where can I find tough living room furniture?

Hello, I am looking for an industrial strength living room furniture set, possibly sold by themselves. Something that will stand up to a lot. Ex. my old furniture set after just a few months the coffee table's legs are falling off and the chairs to the dining table are falling apart, as well as the dining table itself having the cheap laminate it was covered with peel off. However this time I am optimally just looking for a living room set, meaning no table and chairs. If anyone could tell me where I can find them cheap without spending too much. Either online or in store I don't care but I live in California so it would have to be a store I could go to nearby.

Question #2:

Moving into my first apartment.... what items are must haves?

details:
The apartment has a bedroom, living room, dining room, kitchen, and bathroom (with a linen closet in the bathroom).
I'm the military, and my BAH is $841, BAS is $323. It starts up on the first of next month, and I will have a month's worth of back pay, so about an extra $1000 to spend on getting what I need.
I basically have nothing - I used to live on base so I have no furniture, just some bedding (sheets, towels, etc), some cheap dishes and plastic forks, and wall art.
What are the basics that I'll need right away, and some cheap places to get furniture and whatever else?

Question #3:

Should I approach my sister or cast it all away?

Ugh! Sorry for the length.
Skip down to the ** if you don't want to read the whole thing.

I had gotten used to it just being my dad and I here, which was actually quite nice, considering our family history, but now, well, my sister and her boyfriend moved in. The house (five bedrooms) has plenty of space, and it's almost nice to have her around, sometimes - I guess, but she's getting on my last nerve and I don't know how to approach the situation without her taking offense.

The little things I've been able to just push aside, like her coming into the kitchen and re-arranging everything in the cupboards. They were already organized nicely, she just thought her way was, "better." I squeezed out a nod and just left the situation. That sort of thing continued with the dining room furniture, the kitchen table placement, and she took my spot in the driveway. All of this annoys me, but I'm not too concerned about them, they are just what started it.

I was worried about the amount of animals she was bringing, two lizards (large ones!), two dogs, a few birds, a ferret, and fish. Other than most of them smelling like sh;t, I have a cat and her 8 week old kittens. They stay in my bedroom and bath for now, but her dog, Tasha, chased my other cat, Tommy, all around the house. Wait until my kittens are ready to explore our house, that's going to be stressful. Sigh.

**********

Her pets were enough to take on, now the real animals are the people her boyfriend, Tim, brings around. They are gross and rude, and they make a mess in the kitchen and are too lazy to clean up. They are loud, even after I ask them to please keep it quiet, especially at night.

I've complained to my dad, but he's just as cautious when approaching my sister. Jen has always gotten what she's wanted, spoiled brat, and I guess I'm guilty of spoiling her, even though she's a couple years older, weird. Well, his friends are her friends, so telling her that they need to calm down or not come here at all, will cause tension between us, which I don't need.

How can I tell her my feelings about his friends, without them taking offense? Am I out of line? If I should just keep my mouth shut, please say so. If you think I'm being a wimp, I agree..

Thanks.

Question #5:

how to get rid of cigarette smell in furniture?

I bought some dining room furniture and the previous owners were smokers. It is glass and wood. I have cleaned all surfaces but everything still smell the smoke. What can I use?. Air freshners, Fabreeze and plug ins just mask the smell. It is still there.

Question #6:

How to arrange furniture in my living room?

I just bought a house, and my living room is roughly a 21' x 13.5' rectangle. It's a LOT bigger than what I usually deal with (tiny apartment living rooms). I have no idea how to arrange my sparse furniture in this monster of a room!
On the long north wall, you have the front door way off to the side, and a window in the middle. The long south wall has a large opening into the dining room, a fireplace, and a small cabinet/bookshelf thing. The short west wall by the fireplace has a window in the middle, and the short east wall has a small opening into the hallway off to the side.
The furniture I have at the moment:
One average sized sofa.
One coffee table
One old crappy TV (this will probably get replaced soon with a flat screen)
and possibly one computer desk.

That's it!
My biggest complaint is that I can't figure out how to arrange the couch and TV around the fireplace without leaving the other half of the room (where the front door is) totally empty and sad-looking.
I will happily take suggestions that involve adding some furniture. I am willing to buy some book shelves, tables, chairs, etc. Just not another couch or loveseat, because I can't afford it. lol

Question #7:

Does this paragraph from my book have too little, enough, or way too much description?

Candles lined the walls, lighting the room. There was a burgundy couch on the left side of the room with a small, scuffed up coffee table sitting in front of it. The couch must have been an older piece of furniture, because the cushions were sagging along the edges and a few straggly strands of cloth were hanging off along the sides. There were three doors on the right wall of the room. In the far left corner was an oval dining table for six. In the far right corner was a cooler. I didn’t know what it was for and I had a feeling that I didn’t want to find out.

Please help! Thanks! ;)

Question #8:

Heard leaking water entered tenant's unit find a mess what now?

OK here is the situation:

I was in the basement of my building and I could hear water. It was a steady stream of water not a drip but not like a pipe was broke and water was gushing out. I followed the noise and found that it was coming from their bathroom. It was around their shower stall. In the past they had complained about their sink pipes and shower pipes leaking. When my husband checked it the sink pipes were lease and leaking so he tightened it and cleaned the water. However, he could not find anything with the shower. We told them if it happened again to let us know.

I knew the tenant was not home bc I had seen her leave for work. In their lease it does state that we will gain entrance to unit without notice in a situation like this. So, I went into the apt. I ran the doorbell first then when I unlocked the door I yelled in and waited when no one came (I wanted to be sure no one was there and me scare them or anything). i went to the back of their apt where the bathroom is and I found the shower was on. It wasn't a full on but enough to waste some water. When I turned the knob it shut off with no problem. I checked all the pipes and found nothing leaking. However, the on thing I did find is that the entire apt (except for their front room at the front door) is completely trashed!!!! They used their furniture to block the dining room so (which you have to walk thru to get to the bathroom) when you are at the door you can not see the disaster. It is terrible!! I could not believe it! There is literally garbage and clothes and papers EVERYWHERE. The only floors that can be walked across without kicking things is the front living room and the kitchen. Also, There was a pile of soaking wet towels on the kitchen floor. (I know this is wrong but I did it) I opened the door to their laundry room and was absolutely astonished. There is no way you could walk into that room (which makes sense for all the clothes that was lying around!) All the kitchen cabinets were handing wide open and things just thrown about. As far as the garbage on the floor I did not really see like food garbage more like empty detergent bottles and just stuff.
Can i go back in and take photos? I do not tolerate this and their lease states the unit must be clean and all entry and exits accessible (one exit from the laundry room is no where near accessible). Or do I have to notify them then go take the photos? Also, what type of documentation do I need about the 'leaking' water in case this goes to court. I did enter upon a legitimate reason which was founded. I just found a lot of other stuff too!!!!!

(My husband states that when he was in there to check pipes that the apt wasn't dirty it was very scattered and nothing was put away but the floors were picked up. My sis who lives in the building and had gone to their apt a few times after they moved in to play cards and hang out (they are all in their 20's) and she told me that they had a lot of boxes with clothes piled but never all over. I just figured they were taking a little longer to unpack as the woman was pregnant with twins and had a toddler daughter.
Sorry I jsut saw that I was not very clear in the beginning. When I was in the basement I heard it and followed it to what would be one of the first floor apartments shower stall. I then went up and went in. They're apt is not in the basement, I was not in their apt when I heard the water.

Question #9:

What color should I paint my dining room and what color curtains should I have?

HELP US PICK A DINING ROOM COLOR AND CURTAIN COLOR FOR OUR DINING ROOM!

My boyfriend and I just moved into an apartment together and we need some help with painting our place. We want to have an accent wall behind our dining room set. Our furniture, as you can see, is all pretty dark, so we would like to have a color pop to bring everything out and together. Keep in mind that we just moved in so the place lacks personality altogether.

Some things to consider:
-we have dark brown furniture.
-we have cream walls as of now.
-The vase on our table doesn't have to be used in decorating... its just something I received from a family friend (and love). Pretty much the one colored accent piece we have right now haha
-The colors in our items that we have around the open living area are mocha brown and stark white (we like the contrast together)
-we don't plan on keeping the blinds on the windows... we want to get white sheers and some drapes/panels for the windows and to soften the look up a bit.
-the windows are huggggggeeeee! Please see our picture in the link provided so you can see what we are working with!
-oh, p.s. we hate red
-any insight on good web sites to get inexpensive curtains from would be great too!

Please see our picture so you can kind of see what we are talking about!

we welcome any insight on some inspiration!

Thanks! Amber and Kevin

Question #10:

Cats clawing EVERYTHING.?

Before we moved, I never had an issue with my three cats clawing up the furniture. Never in the small apartment. Never in my grandmother's small house with me, my husband, grandmother and newborn little girl, the cats NEVER clawed up the furniture like they do now. They only ever clawed one chair in particular, and it wasn't a huge deal.

We moved into a new house. It's larger, three bed/two bath. The living room set and dining room set is all new. The dining room chairs are leather. All of them are ruined, the cats are clawing the seats, the backs and the backs to the backs. The leather is full of holes and the one couch has holes in it from clawing. We've only been in this house for four months, therefore the furniture is only four months new. They have even taken to climbing the shelving units in the laundry room and clawing the ceiling insulation.

I clip all of the cats nails regularly. Their litter boxes are cleaned regularly. They always have food and clean water in their dish. They had no problems acclimating to the new house, so it seemed. (They seemed to like the larger space better.) We're going to put double sided tape on all of the chairs and couches, but we can't keep double sided tape on all of the dining room chairs all of the time, where will we sit to eat? Where will guests come to sit and eat? It's such an embarrassment to have guests over and serve dinner with ruined dining room furniture (my cats have NEVER clawed leather before). I've also used that No Scratch spray, doesn't seem to work too well.

If I weren't so extremely opposed to declawing, I'd have it done. I have never been so at my wits end when it came to my animals, but it has to stop. Does anyone have any ideas?
I forgot to mention, I also have a very nice cat tree for them to climb on and scratch up. I've put catnip on it to attract them and they scratch is sometimes. Not as much as the furniture...

Question #11:

Tips for going to the Canton Trade Days?

My husband and I just bought our first house, and it's totally empty. It's a larger home, and we have nothing to fill it with. We were thinking about going to the Canton Trade Days to buy dining room sets, bed frames, house decor, living room furniture...etc. Do they sell that stuff there and what are the prices? Is it even worth it to go? And how much money should we take to get all that? Any help would be appreciated!

Thank you!

Question #12:

How do I approach this touchy subject with my hubby?

Married 4 yrs. He has 3 kids ages 15,16 and 17. My child is 22. When he first moved in with me to my house with my daughter. We agreed the girls would share a room. After several months my daughter started complaining about his daughter leaving her trash all over the room, glasses of soda, chips, food crumbs and putting my daughters photos under the bed. She would leave wet towels laying around on the wood furniture. I said something to my hubby and he flipped out on me saying we agreed they could share the bedroom and if there was a problem then he would make his daughter a bedroom somewhere else in the house. So he did.

My daughter would leave her dirty dished in the sink or leave her mess after cooking herself something to eat. She would leave her stuff laying around in the living room or dining room and I was on her constantly about picking it up. Hubby would always complain to me about how she has no respect for me. She ended up moving out because his kids kept teasing her dog. Now his kids leave their messes and nothing is said. Every weekend, they string the Xbox equipment across the living room, leave their dishes in the living room, leave candy papers on the floor and use the dining room as their closet. When they leave on Sunday night my hubby picks up after them.

His youngest son, comes in clothes on Thurs or Fri and leaves in the same clothes on Sun or Mon. He sleeps in them and never takes a bath after fishing and sweating in these clothes.

A few weeks ago we bought a new sofa and I said no eating, drinking or sleeping on the sofa well every weekend the youngest has slept on it and of course there are excuses such as there was stuff on the bed, it was too cold in his room or he just feel asleep.

When I bring up anything about his kids during our weekly marriage therapy sessions my hubby gets mad. So how can I bring up this issues? In his eyes his kids are perfect.

Question #17:

Help with dining room colour?

I need a little help choosing a colour for my dining room. Right now it's an awful shade of red so I know it's going to be hard to paint over. The dining room is in between the living room and kitchen which both are painted two different shades of brown. I kind of want something a little different than the brown. The furniture in there is pretty neutral so it should really go with anything.

Thanks!

Question #18:

read my chapter and give advice please?

The first time I went to a party with Amber was two or three years ago, I was thirteen and she was fourteen. It was New Year's Eve, she'd been invited to a big party by a couple of the girls from the year above. Her parents were going out, so Amber took three invites - one for me, one for her and one for Rose, a friend from school.
We could hear the music throbbing out of the house from right down the street, and whilst this made me more nervous, it appeared to make Amber and Rose more excited.
“Remember, we have to be back at mine for one o'clock, at the latest.” Amber reminded us, just as we stepped into the house.
“Hey,” An older looking boy, probably about nineteen, shouted just after we stepped through the door. “You got proof you're invited?”
“Yes,” Said Amber, “Of course.”
“Show me, or leave.” Amber began to rummage through her clutch bag, and I looked around. The smell of perfume, alcohol and sweat hung in the air already, it was dark – the lights had been dimmed – and all furniture had disappeared. It was a big house, only ten minutes from Amber's, and I could see the kitchen off to my left, which was packed with teenagers, and another room, the source of the music. Through the doorway, I could see girls in short dresses dancing against boys, both genders holding drinks.
“There.” Amber said, eventually. “Three invites.”
“Right, you can go in. If anyone's giving you trouble, come get me, I'll make sure they leave.”
“Thanks,” Amber smirked, “But we'll be fine.”
“You sure? You look a little young,” He frowned.
Amber rolled her eyes and turned to me, “I need a drink.”

The kitchen was a sea of bodies and noise, we waded our way through to the drinks and grabbed something that looked blue and fizzy. “It says it has vodka in it,” I said, nervous. “You sure it's Okay?”
“Yes, I'm sure.” Amber rolled her eyes. “Grab another one each and come through to the sofa room he was talking about.”
I clung desperately to Amber's hand as she pulled me through the crowds, her manicured nails making little marks in my palm. She dragged us to a spare sofa and we sat down, not really sure what to do.
“The music's so loud,” Rose shouted, “I can hear the words from here.”
“Of course it's loud, nobody likes quiet music do they?”
“It's better than going deaf,” Rose sighed.
The blue drink tingled in my mouth, and I couldn't taste the vodka at all. It was actually quite nice, I decided. After Amber had finished her first drink, she opened her second and stood up. “Let's go dance,” She grinned, “Come on!”
“Fine,” I sighed, “You coming, Rose?” Rose stood up silently, taking my hand as we made our way through to the 'dining room'. The other two started to dance, their bodies moving provocatively in time with the music.
“Come on, Brooke,” Amber laughed, taking my hand and dancing close to me. I could smell her perfume, fruity and expensive. “Loosen up! It's new year!”
I smiled nervously, moving my hips a little from side to side. “Come on!” She shouted again, “Dance, Brooke, dance!”
“I need another drink,” I said, “I'll be back in a minute.”
“You've not drunk that one yet,” Rose frowned.
“I don't like it, I want a different one.” I stuttered, walking away. My hands were shaking and my heart was pounding, but I didn't know why. It was only dancing. I put the bottle down on a table as I walked past, out of the room.
A voice from behind me shouted, “You not drinking that?”
I shook my head, moving away.
“I'll have it then,” The girl shrugged. Her friend sniggered something that sounded like, “Don't! You don't know where her mouth's been,” but I didn't pay any attention.
In the kitchen, I pushed past people quickly, grabbing a big bottle of diet coke from the counter top. There was a stack of plastic cups at the far side of the kitchen and, once I reached them, I poured myself a drink and took a mouthful.
“You wanting some vodka in that?” A boy from behind me said. I turned, swallowing my drink. He was quite tall and looked about fifteen. He was quite good looking, with brown eyes and blonde hair. A big, glass bottle of vodka was in his left hand, unopened.
I nodded quickly, putting my cup back onto the counter. The boy opened the vodka and poured some into my glass. I took a sip, trying not to wince at the taste.
“My name's David,” He smiled, screwing the top back onto the bottle.
“Brooke,” I replied.
“Nice,” He smiled at me, his brown eyes all chocolatey and warm. “I've got some friends through there, you want to join us?”
“Alright,” I smiled, it couldn't be worse than dancing, at least.

David lead me to the sofa, where three other boys sat. He introduced them and they all smiled at me as I sat down.
“How old are you, Brooke?” One of the boys, I think his name was Jack, asked me.
I was about to reply I was thirteen, but a voice from behind me said, “We're fifteen.”
“Amb

Question #19:

Is it weird to put an area rug on carpet?

I have very light colored tan carpeting throughout my house with contemporary decor. The color scheme reads more towards reds/browns/orange, and the furniture style is mainly espresso and light tan pieces with contemporary lines. The walls in my combined living room and dining room are a very light silver/gray with a half accent wall in bright red below the chair rail in the dining nook. The living room is spacious but I feel it really needs some more pop in color other than just the painting we have on the large wall. I've found this area rug that I really like and I think it would look good, but I have to ask, is it weird or awkward to have an area rug in a carpeted living room? I just can't help but feel like I need to cover up the massive amounts of neutral carpet.

Here's the rug, in case it helps in visualizing with the rest of the description above.

Question #20:

Does Raymour & Flanigan Sell Quality Furniture?

We have dealt with Furniture Companies that are full of empty promises and shotty merchandise. I always see the Raymour & Flanigan truck delivering furniture to my neighbors so we decided to buy the Giovanni Dining Room set from them. Can anyone else share their experiences with this company? Are their products any good?
